Newhope Library Vietnamese American Projects

The Newhope Library Branch of the Santa Ana Public Library has received a $30,000 Partnerships for Change grant for 1991-1992 from the California State Library. The purpose of this program is to encourage use of public libraries by California's ethnic communities.

With part of these the funds the library has begun two projects. The Vietnamese Chamber of Commerce, on contract from the library, is conducting taped interviews with eight individuals prominently involved in Orange County's Vietnamese community. The two topics to be covered are business development in Little Saigon, and the influence of religion on Vietnamese refugees. The interviews will be transcribed and available in bilingual editions. Dave Nguyen, a local photographer, is assisting with the other project, documenting the "Little Saigon" community through photographs.

The Newhope Library is located at

122 N. Newhope, Santa Ana CA 92703; (714) 647-5792.

Professor Pham Cao Duong will be offering the class "Vietnamese in America" (Comparative Culture 169B) during winter quarter.
