New Southeast Asian Studies Class

Humanities Research Institute 1998-1999 postdoctoral fellow Jacqueline Siapno is offering "Southeast Asia: Literatures and Visual Cultures" fall quarter. This course is a survey of colonial and post-independence Southeast Asian history as articulated in literature, film, religion and popular culture. Examined will be ideas of power, political agency, sexuality, and resistance, with a strong emphasis on analysis of cultural attributes and images activated in the "traditional" representations of the "model" female. Special focus on Vietnam, the Philippines, Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand, Laos, Malaysia, Burma, and East Timor. Course code: 20756.
