Project 20 1975-1995: Vietnamese in America after 20 Years

1995 marks the 20th anniversary of the arrival of Vietnamese refugees in the United States. In order to commemorate this event, celebrate Vietnamese American identity, and express gratitude to their adopted homeland, Project 20 has planned a year long commemoration of cultural exhibits, concerts, and lectures.

The official kick-off event was a photography exhibit, sponsored by the Vietnamese Student Association, at the Tet Festival, January 28-29, held at Golden West College.

A number of activities are scheduled in February at the Vietnamese American Arts and Letters Association (VAALA). This includes a photo exhibition, February 4-25. An artistic reach- out by sculptor William Snapp with a group of Vietnamese American artists will take place on February 18 at 3 PM. Non-Vietnamese artists are encouraged to participate in this event. On February 26 there will be a literary symposium on publishing Vietnamese books outside of Vietnam. An exhibition of silk paintings will take place on March 4. All these events will take place at VAALA headquarters, 11022 Acacia Parkway, Suite A, Garden Grove, CA 92640, 714/537-8352.

Events will continue at California State University Fullerton on March 10 with a variety show of Vietnamese music and entertainment, sponsored by CSUF's Vietnamese Student Association. Official opening ceremonies at CSUF will take place on March 17 with the first of a series of symposiums on Vietnamese refugee life in the United States at 9 AM. At 1 PM a photojournalism exhibition, "Life of the Vietnamese Community in Orange County," compiled by local Vietnamese- and English- language newspapers will open. At 5:30 PM hand-crafted artifacts made by prisoners of communist "re-education camps" will go on exhibit at the Museum of Anthropology. On March 31, the CSUF School of Communications will sponsor a symposium on Indochinese Culture and the American Media at 9 AM. That evening at 5 PM an exhibit of Vietnamese American artists' work will open at the CSUF Art Gallery.

Events in April include a concert of Vietnamese traditional music, location and date to be announced, and an art exhibition at the UC Irvine Langson Library. More on these events and others scheduled for the Spring and Summer will be found in the Spring quarter issue of this newsletter.
