Phaïm’s A sense of duty: My father, my American journey tells the story of the author’s experiences coming to the United States in 1975 as a refugee at the age of ten with his mother and sisters, his life in Southern California and term of duty as a marine aviator during the Gulf War. His father, a South Vietnamese fighter pilot, remained in a Vietnamese reeducation camp until he was able to join his family in the early 1990s. This book is a tribute to his now deceased father and his own personal story of coming to grips with his refugee background, the military, and war. Surviving twice: Amerasian children of the Vietnam War, by Trin Yarborough focuses on the true-life stories of five Amerasians from Vietnam who came to the United State under the Amerasian Homecoming Act. Approxi- mately 100,000 Amerasians were fathered by U.S. troops in Vietnam during the War, and 30,000 immigrated to the U.S. as teenagers during 1988-1994. Subject to poverty and discrimination in Vietnam and ignored by the American government until the late 1980s, these young people have struggled to survive in their adopted land.
